What is the role of the School Games Organiser?

School Games Organiser – ‘Nick Ruddick’

Building on the good work of the Cannock and Rugeley School Sport Partnership Nick Ruddick took over the running of the partnership in November 2011 at Hagely Park Academy.  The focus of the workforce had been diluted, but the enthusiasm for sport within the district had not diminished.  The remit of the SGO is to ensure that competitions run at Intra (level 1) ;  Inter (Level 2) and County (Level 3); administer the Change4 Life programme at secondary and primary levels; develop sports leadership in schools and establish Leadership Academies across the partnership; give opportunities for young  people to develop as Young Ambassadors for their schools and; as a partner school for the YST take responsibility for delivering “Bikeability” across the partnership.  SGO’s are also responsible for validating schools application for Kitemark from within their partnership.

In the first year the majority of the 47 schools within the district held level 1 competitions with many using the Get Set Network as the launch pad for celebrating the Olympics and Paralympics.  Within the Partnership every school was a member of the Get Set Network and the majority had registered for The School Games.   85 % took part in the National School Sports Week and organised a “Big Day” of sport that was broader than a traditional sports day.

Some 60% of the primary schools and all the high schools took part in level 2 competitions organised by the SGO and a number of primaries who didn’t enter the partnership competitions, competed within their cluster in competitions organised by their Teacher Release post. (SSCo). A representative from Cannock and Rugeley competed in every Level 3 event from Year 3 & 4 Tag Rugby to KS5 Extreme Golf.

The priority for 2012-13 is to keep the spirit of the flame alive and work on the promotion of legacy.

Expand the numbers of schools holding Intra events and encourage them to broaden the range of activities in which these are held; work in double clusters to arrange more cluster competitions for primary schools, especially those who may be reluctant to enter at a partnership level; increase competition at secondary level with more schools striving to represent the Partnership and; achieve more success at the Level 3 competitions that are being held during the course of the year culminating in the County School Games in July.
